PS5 40 million units sold

Sony Interactive Entertainment just announced that the PS5 has passed a relevant sales milestone.

According to the announcement, the console has sold through over 40 million units, which means that's an estimate of consoles sold to customers, not just to retailers.

For reference, the latest figure we had was 38.4 million units shipped by March 2023, so it was just a matter of time before the console passed 40 million units. We also know that Sony expects to ship 25 million units this fiscal year, which would bring the total tally to 63.4 million by March 31, 2024.

It's worth mentioning that the next financial announcement by Sony will come on August 9, so we'll have to wait until then to hear a new figure for shipments. While that number is going to be updated only until June 30, it's very possible that it may be over 40 million due to the difference between shipments to retailers and sales to customers.

It's worth mentioning that today's announcement doesn't mention when exactly the 40 million milestone has been passed.

Following its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has been plagued by supply issues for years, leaving many unable to simply head to a retailer and buy a console. Today, these problems have been largely addressed, and it's much easier to just walk into a store and find PS5 on the shelves.

You can stay tuned on TechRaptor for the update on PS5 shipments on August 9.
