Frogwares has confirmed that when the new version of investigative horror game The Sinking City arrives on Steam, it will be free for all existing players.

This news was revealed as part of an FAQ for the new version of the game, in which Frogwares flatly confirms that the new version will, indeed, be available for players at no additional charge.

When the new version of The Sinking City was revealed last week, Frogwares didn't technically confirm that players wouldn't have to pay for the game again, although it was assumed this would be the case.

"...so, you see, the game actually will be free if you've already bought the old version."

Frogwares says it doesn't know exactly when the new version will arrive, but that the current plan is to launch around mid-January.

The old version of the game will be available until February 28th, at which point it'll disappear. Better make sure you've started a game on the new version before then.

If you do want to play the new version of The Sinking City without starting from scratch, Frogwares says it'll prepare save files that will allow you to do so.

However, they "won't be able to match your previous progress 100%", as they'll be saves specially prepared by Frogwares rather than exact copies of your old save files.

At present, there aren't any plans to implement visual or gameplay updates in the new version, but that also means the system requirements will remain the same.

DLC that's currently available on other platforms will be made available on Steam, but it won't be compatible with the old version, so you'll have to play the new version if you want to enjoy extra The Sinking City content.

If you're not across the whole The Sinking City debacle, the game was removed from sale on Steam in 2021 after a dispute between Frogwares and original publisher Bigben Interactive (now Nacon).

Eventually, it was reinstated, but Frogwares alleged that the re-release was uploaded without its consent and issued a DMCA claim against the re-released version.

Now, though, Frogwares has full publishing rights over The Sinking City, and so the new version of the game won't have anything to do with the Nacon dispute. Stay tuned for more.
