Sierra founders Ken and Roberta Williams are working on a Colossal Cave Adventure remake. Titled Colossal Cave 3D Adventure, the remake is set to launch on PC and Mac, and there's also a VR version in development for the Meta (formerly Oculus) Quest 2.
What do we know about the Colossal Cave Adventure remake?
Last year, it was revealed that gaming industry legends and Sierra On-Line founders Ken and Roberta Williams (now going by Cygnus Entertainment) were working on a new game. Now, they've finally announced exactly what that project is. Colossal Cave 3D Adventure is a remake of the classic 1970s text adventure Colossal Cave Adventure, but unlike the original game, this one will be fully 3D. The official website for the Williams' new title describes it as a "fully immersive VR experience" aiming to launch this year.
The setup for the remake will be very similar to the original game. You are an explorer seeking treasure, and you come across the titular Colossal Cave in your travels. You must navigate its many pitfalls and puzzles, interact with its denizens, and try to figure out a way to make it out of the cave unscathed and with the treasure. Along the way, you'll encounter trolls, bears, snakes, and pirates, among other things. Ken and Roberta say the game won't be easy, but that it is "a family-oriented game", and it's targeting the same vibe as the King's Quest series.
When is the Colossal Cave Adventure remake release date?
According to Cygnus, you can expect Colossal Cave 3D Adventure to launch sometime this summer. Somewhat confusingly, though, a banner asking interested fans to sign up to a mailing list on the same website also lists the release window as "fall 2022". It's likely Cygnus is targeting the later window, so it might be best to chalk this one up to a fall release. We'll have to wait and see what Ken and Roberta Williams announce regarding a more concrete release date in the near future.
This remake is one of many classic PC games getting the modernization treatment. Late last year, the troubled System Shock remake got itself a new publisher in Prime Matter, renewing hopes that the game would see the light of day soon. The appetite for open-ended, somewhat obscure puzzle games is also clearly not waning, if the release of the Myst remake on Xbox and PC last year is anything to go by. We'll bring you more on Colossal Cave 3D Adventure and the puzzle of its release date as soon as we get it.
