I never had a chance to play Guacamelee!, and so when I found out I was going to be playing it at this year's PlayStation experience, I had no idea what to expect. I initially thought how bizarre this games concept was and the art design was a little off putting due to its vibrancy and over-stylized look. However, once I started playing, all of my doubts went out the window and I found myself not wanting to put the controller down.
Guacamelee! 2 is fast paced, quirky, and has an amazing visual performance (contrary to what I said before). Not only was my first play through of this game five stars, I also was thoroughly impressed with the way Drinkbox implemented the co-op system. It reminded me of when I was a kid and would wait at the arcade for hours at a time to play beat em up games with my friends. Guacamelee! 2 brings back that simplicity of old school arcade gaming mixed with new age graphics and silly gameplay methodology. If you are wondering what I mean by "silly" exactly, then I will explain for those who do not already know. Yes, you can play as the chicken and a lot more time is spent as this character. Half way through the demo, my character received the power up to turn into chicken (from the chicken pope) and not more than thirty seconds later, I am an even larger chicken. The aspect of the chicken may sound ridiculous at first, but it adds to the hilarity of the game. I have nothing but positive things to say about Guacamelee! 2. The gameplay, art style, and couch co-op are all exceptional and make for a game that is definitely worth looking out for next year in 2018.
In the video below, Nick and I gave our initial reactions to Guacamelee! 2 out here on the PSX show floor.
