Today Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that 50 million PS5 units have been sold through to customers worldwide.

The announcement, made via press release, specifies that the impressive milestone has been reached on December 9.

We also hear that the console has "experienced strong momentum this year."

Interestingly, we learn that November 2023 set a record for PlayStation units sold in the key Holiday month in the history of the brand.

The press release includes a comment from Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, who will leave the post soon

Achieving this PS5 sales milestone is a testament to the unwavering support of the global PlayStation community and their passion for the incredible experiences created by the talented developers from PlayStation Studios and our partners.

We’re grateful for all of our players who have joined the PS5 journey so far, and we’re thrilled that this is the first holiday season since launch that we have a full supply of PS5 consoles – so anyone who wants to get one can get one.

Among the drivers of the recent momentum, Sony cites Marvel’s Spider-Man 2Baldur’s Gate 3Alan Wake 2, EA SPORTS FC 24, and Roblox.

The news comes a mere 5 months after Sony announced that the console had sold through to customers over 40 million units. Moving 10 million units in that timeframe certainly isn't a bad achievement.

It's worth mentioning that the latest sell-in (sales to retailers) figure was 46.6 Million as of September 30, 2023.

Of course, comparing sell-through with sell-in isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but it's still a decent indicator of how fast the console has been flying off the shelves from October onward.

It's worth mentioning that Sony plans to sell in 25 million units in the fiscal year between April 2023 and March 2024.

In the latest financial conference call, CFO and COO Hiroki Totoki, who will take on PlayStation's leadership in the interim between Ryan's departure and the advent of a new CEO, described the goal as a challenging one to achieve.
