Today the Asian arm of PlayStation released a new ad for the PS5 celebrating the Lunar New Year and featuring a popular Korean singer and Actress.
Specifically, the star of the ad is Kim Sejeong of Produce 101 and The Uncanny Counter fame. She's very well known in Korea and across Asia, so the choice of using her as the face of the "Happy New Play-Year" that the ad promotes isn't so surprising.
She appears in various costumes dedicated to various games, a player from NBA 2K24 and EA Sports FC 24, Aloy from Guerrilla Games' Horizon series, Tifa from Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and a driver from Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 7.
The ad is brief, but it's an interesting look at how Sony Interactive Entertainment promotes the PS5 to the local market.
I'm actually rather surprised that Shift Up's Stellar Blade isn't featured, considering that it's by a local developer and published by PlayStation itself.
You can watch the video below.
Of course, being quite focused on the Asian market, it's quite unlikely that this commercial will ever make it to Western media.
Speaking of PS5, Sony has just announced that it has shipped 54.7 million units of the console as of December 31, 2023.
While the number is certainly large, and the Holiday quarter wasn't bad at all in terms of sales, we also learned that it fell short of the company's expectations, causing it to lower its previously ambitious forecast of 25 million units to be sold in the current fiscal year to 21 million.
The company has also reaffirmed its efforts to release some of its games on PC to improve profitability, which may actually help it penetrate the Asian market better, since in some local countries PC gaming is more widespread than console gaming.
