Nosgoth Goes Offline After Years of Development

Community manager Chris Murphy has announced on Nosgoth's Steam page that the Early Access F2P shooter is shutting down permanently on May 31st, 2016. Players who have made purchases in the game since March 1st will automatically be receiving refunds, and Runestones (the game's paid currency) have already been made unavailable. Players will be able to continue playing and earning Gold up until the shutdown date, and ESL event featuring Nosgoth will continue to run until the end of April.

Nosgoth was developed by Psyonix, the developers who recently gained notoriety for the popular Rocket League. The game pitted teams of humans and vampires against one another, and feature a class based character system, animal transformations, and a mix of projectile and melee focused combat.

Nosgoth was originally planned to be the multiplayer component of a much larger single player action adventure entitled Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, which was being developed by Climax Studios with help from original Kain developers Crystal Dynamics for release on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The project was cancelled by Square Enix before ever being officially announced. Nosgoth originally launched onto the Steam storefront on January 15th, 2015 and never officially left Early Access.

Quick Take

I played exactly one hour of Nosgoth right when it launched, and never got back around to it during its brief existence. From what I hear on the Internet at large and from other TechRaptor staff, it was a good time, and it's always a shame when a game goes offline forever. Still, the shutdown notice says it best. The F2P shooter market if chock-full of titles with amazing lifespans and dedicated players who rack up thousands of hours. It would be hard for any game to break through that wall, and Nosgoth just wasn't the game to do it.
