Sony has stated that there will be no free Spider-Man PS5 upgrade for current owners. If you were hoping to get Spider-Man: Remastered, you'll only be able to get it for next-gen systems with a purchase of Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales was one of the many PS5 games that was revealed earlier this year. One week ago, Sony dropped the news that Spider-Man: Remastered would let players experience an upgraded version of PS4's Marvel's Spider-Man if they purchase the Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.

One of the big things this year is free upgrades for next-gen versions of games. Not all games are getting an upgrade, mind, and some situations are trickier than others. As one example, current owners of Control can't get the next-gen version without buying the new Ultimate Edition.

Naturally, spider-fans were curious: will there be a free Spider-Man PS5 upgrade? Unfortunately, the answer provided by Sony is not a happy one.

What Did Sony Say About the Spider-Man PS5 Upgrade?

If you're hoping to get a free next-gen upgrade for Spider-Man, you're going to be disappointed. Sony provided a statement to Kotaku that lays out the situation:

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is an enhanced version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and is included as part of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 5. In addition, players who purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 4 can upgrade at no additional cost to the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and can take advantage of a paid-upgrade to download Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered.

There are no plans currently to offer Marvel’s-Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone. Players with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 can purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition to experience Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 also will be backwards compatible on PS5.

In case this is a bit confusing, here's a breakdown:

  • The PS4 Marvel's Spider-Man is backwards compatible on PS5.
  • Spider-Man: Remastered is an enhanced version of the PS4 game.
  • You can only get Spider-Man: Remastered by purchasing the Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.
  • There are "no plans" to offer Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone title.
  • There will be no free upgrade of any sort for current owners of the PS4 Marvel's Spider-Man game.

In an unsurprising move, it seems that Sony wants people to buy Spider-Man: Miles Morales and they're keeping Spider-Man: Remastered as a bonus for Ultimate Edition owners. If you don't care about the new Miles Morales game but want to play Spider-Man: Remastered, it seems like you won't have much of a choice.

What do you think about the Spider-Man PS5 upgrade situation? Would you want to buy Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone game? Let us know in the comments below!
