Nightmare Boy, a Metroidvania game with a positively monstrous protagonist, will be heading to the Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2018, according to a press release from publisher Badland Games.

The first game of developer The Vanir ProjectNightmare Boy is a Metroidvania with a spooky sort of theme. Taking on the role of the titular character, you'll head into the state of Noctum and try to save some unfortunate kiddos who have fallen into the realm now led by a usurper to the throne. The King of Noctum has disappeared, and chaos rules in this land of dreams and nightmares (but mostly nightmares). You'll meet NPCs of varying stripes, acquire new movement abilities & powers, and fight the sort of baddies that come straight out of a fever-induced Nyquil haze. You can get a feel for the game by checking out its launch trailer from October 2017:

I'm certainly a fan of any spoopy game that makes good use of an organ in their soundtrack, but that might just be due to my love of all things Castlevania.

Nightmare Boy was created by indie studio The Vanir Project, a company that's comprised of just two people; one developer tackles the programming aspects of the game and the other does all of the artistic heavy lifting. The game was originally created as a project for the two developers to learn about programming and game development and in a nice turn of fortune they ended up creating a game that they particularly enjoyed playing. They've since penned a publishing deal with Badland Games and released their first title onto PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

If you'd prefer to grab the game on another platform, you can get it on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One and the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 4 for $12.99 or your regional equivalent. PC gamers can grab it on Steam for $9.99Nightmare Boy will release on Nintendo Switch on January 16, 2018.
