The New World Closed Beta has launched and it looks like it's pretty popular — it's doing pretty darn well in terms of players on Steam and over 700,000 people are watching people play the game on Twitch.
New World is the upcoming MMORPG from Amazon Game Studios. Players had to patiently wait to play it following three release date delays, the most recent of which was announced earlier this year. Now, the Closed Beta has finally begun in earnest and people are playing the game in droves.
New World Closed Beta Hits 190K Concurrent Players on Steam
Let's start with one of the best measures of success — as reported on Reddit, SteamDB shows that the New World Closed Beta has hit a peak of 190,811 players. Those players seem to be giving it a fair shake, too, as the game has maintained this level of popularity for the last hour.
People are tuning in in droves to watch it on Twitch, too. TwitchTracker's page for the game shows that there are just over 700,000 live viewers watching nearly 9,000 individual channels play the game. This handily beats the game's previous peak of 344,140 viewers from August 2020.
So, why is it so popular? Aside from it being a new MMORPG, one contributing factor may be due to how the beta works. As this Reddit comment notes, the game can be run without racking up any playtime on Steam. That means that you might be able to check out the Closed Beta and get a refund without too much hassle if you don't like it.
This early success is certainly promising, but there's no way of knowing if Amazon Games can keep it going when the game actually launches late next month. You can get access to the New World Closed Beta right now by pre-purchasing New World on Steam starting at $39.99 or your regional equivalent.
