Actor and former WWE Superstar Dwayne Johnson will feature in an unnamed video game movie that is set to be announced sometime in 2022 according to a new interview with The Rock.
Video game movies have been hit or miss over the years, even recently. While the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was pretty great (and is getting a sequel as a result of its success), other recent adaptations like 2021's Mortal Kombat were a little less consistent. Now, we've learned that a mysterious new adaptation will bring a video game franchise to the silver screen -- and this upcoming movie will feature legendary action star and professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

News of the new video game movie starring Dwayne Johnson comes via a new interview with the film star for Men's Journal.
"I've always been a big Madden fan. I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year," Johnson said in the interview, responding to a question about bringing more video game characters to the screen. "We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie."
Unfortunately, Johnson was fairly vague about the nature of the project other than stating that it's a game that he's "played for years." NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon highlighted the interview on Twitter and noted that the muscular action star would "make a great Shao Khan."
Dwayne Johnson has had a lengthy film career following nearly a decade in professional wrestling with the WWE, he's only starred in a few video game movies relative to the rest of his career. One of these rare exceptions is his role in the 2005 film adaptation of Doom. He also was in Rampage, and the video gamified Jumanji movies.
We can't say for sure who The Rock will be starring as, but it's sure to be a role befitting his stature as an international movie star. My money's on Rock Man.
