A brand new Alan Wake 2 The Dark Place Trailer has arrived. Over a decade after the first game's release, fans will now see what has become of the writer in his newest story, and Remedy Entertainment's dream game.

The Alan Wake 2 The Dark Place Trailer

During this year's Gamescom Opening Night Live event, Remedy Entertainment's Creative Director, Sam Lake, took the stage to reveal the new Alan Wake 2 The Dark Place trailer.

Lake briefly explains that in the thirteen years since the release of the first Alan Wake, the writer has been trapped in 'The Dark Place', a mindscape where imagination becomes reality.

Outside of some brief appearances in Control's AWE expansion and Alan Wake's American Nightmare, this trailer is the first time Alan has been seen in a videogame since that initlal release.

The trailer is a blend of live-action and in-engine footage. It shows Wake in a twisted version of New York City, as he desperately tries to hold on to his sanity.

The gameplay shown is brief but familiar. Wake uses flashlights and flares to weaken enemies before attacking them. He even appears to be wielding a crossbow and some odd electric lantern device in one section.

The trailer does hint at several story points. It seems a new manuscript has been written by Alan Wake, which is coming true, but he doesn't remember writing it. This is important since in this setting, creative works can fundamentally alter reality.

At first, this seems like a repeat of the events of the first game. There are even sections where the new protagonist, Saga Anderson, questions Alan about the manuscript pages.

There's even a quick appearance of Agent Alex Casey, voiced by James McCaffrey and with the likeness of Sam Lake, who confronts Alan more aggressively, stating he is a killer and the leader of a cult.

But what makes this scenario more sinister is Saga mentioning that Wake has a double. This may be alluding to Mr. Scratch, an evil duplicate of Wake created near the end of the first game.

This means if Mr. Scratch is the author behind this new manuscript, no one is safe.

Alan Wake 2 will release on October 27, 2023.
