Sony’s E3 conference was a constant stream of trailers and of course this included a trailer for the next God of War giving an early 2018 release window for the game.
The trailer shows Kratos and his son speaking about a curse on the boy before showing off some of the gameplay with Kratos wielding an axe and shield as well as what appeared to be frost-based powers to smite foes big and small in some fast and bruital looking melee combat.
The trailer also shows Kratos training his son in the ways of war and showed some gameplay involving both Kratos travelling with the boy in tow and what appeared to be some gameplay from the boy’s perspective. We also saw some Uncharted-like cliff climbing and some of Kratos piloting a boat to get around. The gameplay sections in the footage were interspersed with plenty of cinematics and some cryptic clues as to the new God of War‘s Norse myth-inspired story. The trailer ended with the child interpreting the words of the gigantic ‘World Serpent’ for Kratos and a reveal of an early 2018 release window for the title.
This upcoming God of War title was announced at last year’s E3. The developer has spoken previously about how this will be a more personal tale for Kratos, saying that he is teaching the boy how to be a god, while the boy teaches him how to be human. The developer also spoke last year about the boy’s ability to speak the ancient Norse language, which explains how we saw him playing translator to an ancient serpent in today’s trailer.
God of War will release on PlayStation 4 in early 2018.
