The follow up to 2010’s NieR, NieR: Automata has had a demo announced, along with a Japan only Black Box Edition.

NieR: Automata, due on February 23, 2017, has announced a demo that promised to be “of a 30-to-40 minute, sit-down-and-play kind of volume.” The demo was revealed at the Tokyo Game Show and was announced at the same time as the Japanese only “Black Box Edition” of the game. Previously, Square Enix had only said that they were considering a demo of the game.

Slated to be an eye-watering 250usd, the Square Enix online store exclusive edition includes the game, along with a YoRHa No.2 Type B character figure, a Concert and talk live soundtrack, an art book and a novel, as well a download code for a yet unknown special item for the game.

NieR – Automata is set to take the elements from the original NieR and improve them, in part with a collaboration with Platinum Games. It’s an action RPG set in an open world with multiple playable characters. It will be mostly melee combat with shooting elements available. As well as weapon stories, a recurring element in the Drakengard series that this game is a part of, being planned.

It was announced earlier this year to also be releasing on PC.

Quick Take

For me, seeing a company actually focus on a demo for a game, in 2016, is actually incredible. I can’t remember the last time I saw an actual demo be released for a game. It is a refreshing change from the Ground Zeroes style of selling a demo to consumers at near enough to full price. As for the black box edition, even as a collector, that price makes me look at my wallet and cringe. There is a lot of cool stuff in it, but it is an exceedingly high price tag.

What do you guys think? Will you be playing the demo? Will you be emptying your wallet for the Black Box Edition? Let me know in the comments below.
