Today Square Enix announced that the popular JRPG NieR: Automata has passed another sales milestone.
According to the announcement made on Twitter, the game has passed 7.5 million in sales, including physical shipments and digital sales cumulatively, worldwide.
This is certainly a flattering result for a game born of a rather obscure and niche franchise, but it isn't too surprising considering that it's awesome.
NieR: Automata is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It was originally released in 2017 only for PS4, and then it gradually received ports to other platforms until the latest one for Switch last year.
Our very own Sam Guglielmo praised the game's "unique, shocking, and interesting" story, boss fights, and music in our review of the original release. While we don't have specific information for now, its developers seem rather confident that another NieR game will be coming at some point.
At the moment, an anime titled NieR: Automata Ver1.1a is being aired and it's arguably one of the best adaptations of a video game that we've seen in a while. In the West, it's distributed by Crunchyroll.
Not only is it highly appreciated by the fans and sparked additional interest in the game, but it also gave birth to several collaborations in Japan, including one with the convenience store chain Lawson, one with a chain of public baths, and the pop-up stores at the Loft department stores.
Speaking of the series' creator, Yoko Taro, at the moment he's at the helm of a mobile game by Sega, 404 Game Re:Set.
