While the Kinda Funny Games Showcase brought us lots of action and fighting games, we did get to see a good chunk of puzzle games as well. One that really stood out was A Fold Apart, developed by Lightning Rod Games.

The trailer mainly focused on the romance between the two main characters. We get to see their attempts to make a long distance relationship work through text messages, with the player picking out and sending text messages between characters. In addition, A Fold Apart promises a romance that anyone can relate two, with the ability to switch the gender of the two characters to what you prefer. It's nice to see a game feature inclusive options such as these.

The meat of the gameplay revolves around a central gimmick. The player can fold potions of the level like they're paper, allowing characters to reach areas they couldn't get to before. One section sees the game folding a character with the paper as a way to move him around the level. Another sees the level's two sides folded together to meet in the middle, allowing the player to cross it like a bridge. It's a clever mechanic that looks like it can be used in unique ways.

The developers of the project are Lightning Rod Games, a relatively new studio who has been working on the project since 2017. It's made up of experienced staff who worked at places like Disney, EA, and Ubisoft.

A Fold Apart will be coming out in Spring 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
