Long-awaited sequel Psychonauts 2 won’t launch until 2020. Double Fine hasn’t disclosed a reason for this delay.
According to Dualshockers, Double Fine sent out a press release confirming the delay. Microsoft acquired Double Fine for its Xbox Game Studios label a little while back, and news of the announcement was accompanied by a Psychonauts 2 trailer. The trailer gives us a first look at the game’s moment-to-moment gameplay, but there’s no release date anywhere to be seen. If the game won’t launch until next year, that’d explain why.
Psychonauts 2 has a history of delays. The game was originally supposed to launch sometime in 2018. Double Fine originally estimated this release date when it launched the Fig campaign for Psychonauts 2 in 2015. Another delay won’t be great news for those looking forward to this game. Then again, perhaps we should expect it by now given Double Fine’s slightly less-than-savory reputation. Tim Schafer’s adventure game Broken Age was delayed past its original release date, while games like Spacebase DF-9 haven’t had the love they needed before being released. This delay might be disappointing, but it might give the studio time to perfect the game and make sure it’s match fit.
The original Psychonauts launched back in 2005 for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 2. The sequel will once again focus on Raz and will pick up immediately after the events of Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin. The new game sees Raz attempting to make sense of some sinister changes to the Psychonauts organization in his absence. Schafer says Psychonauts 2 will explore more ideas about Raz’s family, its history, and the curse that plagues it. Rather amusingly, Schafer also says Raz will finally get to grips with the term “girlfriend”.
Psychonauts 2, when it releases, will be available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
