Tabletop gaming companies Stronghold Games and Spielworxx have announced the joint publication of a new title, Sola Fide: The Reformation, in a press release. Based on Martin Luther's historic Protestant Reformation, the game is timed for release with the movements five-hundredth year anniversary. For this publication, Stronghold Games and Spielworxx commissioned foremost historical game design experts Jason Matthews and Christ Leonhard, who have previously designed 1960: The Making of the President, Founding Fathers, and Campaign Manager 2008.
In this game, two players play against each other as either the Protestant movement or as the Catholic establishment. Using card-based gameplay, players attempt to take control of the Holy Roman Empires ten Imperial Circles, represented in-game by ten board tiles. Each board tile is worth between five and seven points; the success of the Protestant movement depends on whoever controls the most Imperial Circles.
An MSRP for Sola Fide: The Reformation has not been provided at this time. It is set for a late October/November 2016 release, and will first debut at Germany's Essen Spiel in October 2016. Sola Fide: The Reformation is rated ages twelve and up, and plays within forty-five minutes.

Quick Take
This game looks very intriguing. Historical games can be a bit hit-or-miss in my opinion, so I'm glad that Stronghold Games and Spielworxx brought on a team like Matthews and Leonhard, who have a reputation for producing high-quality, accurate historical games. To my knowledge, this is the first game to use the Protestant Reformation as source material, so I'll be interested in seeing if more games are produced using this as a theme.
