A brand new format is coming to Magic: The Gathering Arena. This digital free-to-play version of Hasbro's wildly popular card game has received parallel support to its tabletop counterpart, including an iOS port and unique features. Now with Magic: The Gathering Arena Timeless, the game's full history will be unleashed.

The Magic: The Gathering Arena Timeless Announcement

According to an update on the game's Steam store page, Magic: The Gathering Arena Timeless is a new Constructed format for the game. As the name poetically implies, this is a format where all cards throughout the game's history will be playable.

Imagine the chaos that will be unleashed here now.

As for why this format is being introduced, the page states the following:

We are creating Timeless as a home for MTG Arena's most powerful cards. As MTG Arena has grown, we have accumulated extra strong sets like Wilds of Eldraine Enchanting Tales and Strixhaven Mystical Archive. These cards did not have a great place to be played outside of their Limited formats without overrunning an existing Constructed format. Timeless will be a place to play these cards.

The post goes on to state that Magic: The Gathering is in a very healthy place. A place that will only be boosted with the introduction of bonus sheets, The List in Play Boosters, and 2024's upcoming Modern Horizons 3 set.

As for player demand for this format, the post cites two different warmly received events in the game: the Historic No Banned List in September and the Historic Basically No Bans in November respectively.

So what does this mean for Historic format? Overall, the format is well-balanced and supports a diverse meta. As such, the format will be lightly curated going forward, starting with a pre-ban of the fetch lands coming in the Khans of Tarkir update.

The details of Magic: the Gathering Arena Timeless are thus. It is a nonrotating, Constructed format played with 60-card decks. Any card, tabletop or digital-only, is playable. At the time of writing, there are only three Restricted cards: Channel, Demonic Tutor, and Tibalt's Trickery.

The format is live right now.
