Characters in Avowed

Following the reveal last week at the Xbox Developer Direct, Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment showcased more gameplay of the upcoming RPG Avowed

We hear from game director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo as they discuss the game while showing a deeper dive into the gameplay we saw.

Especially, we get to see the freedom of exploration and choice that is a focus in Avowed.

An environment in Avowed

Specifically, we get to see a sidequest that isn't part of the main story, so it's optional and players can decide whether to tackle it or not.

The developers also showcase different ways to attack and defend. The game has a dual-wielding system so you can mix and match one-handed weapons and shields. You can also use wands to cast spells like one that lets you pull your enemies toward you leaving them vulnerable to your melee attacks.

There's an elemental system, that lets you freeze enemies, light them on fire, and more. Spells can be used outside of combat as well, helping with traversal and exploration.

We also hear about the dialogue choices that let the players decide the outcome of quests and the safety of certain NPCs. Interestingly, we get a glimpse at companions as well. They participate both in combat and storytelling.

Of course, Pillars of Eternity players will find plenty of references to the previous games they know and love.

Interestingly, Patel mentions that there'll be a big secret to discover related to the protagonist, and the game is fundamentally about finding out where our loyalties lie and what is important to us.

You can watch the video below.

Avowed will be released in fall 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, including Game Pass.

If you'd like to see more about this highly-anticipated game, you can check out the original reveal from 2020, and the first gameplay reveal from last year.
