Today developer Vanillaware and Publisher Atlus showcased a new video of the upcoming tactical JRPG Unicorn Overlord

The video is the latest of a series designed to teach the basics of the game to aspiring generals, and this time around it focuses on how to fight in battle.

We learn that troops advance in real-time once deployed, and you can give them their marching orders. They will enter battle when they encounter an enemy unit.

Players can swap the position of adjacent friendly units in order to counter specific enemy unity types and attack with an advantage or save an unit that is vulnerable.

The unit with the lower percentage of HP after a fight will be knocked back and enter Waiting State. Attacking a unit in Waiting State grants a First Strike, which is an overwhelming advantage.

Defeating units and liberating towns earns the player Valor, which can be used to deploy units and to activate Valor Skills, which have a variety of useful effects. It's also important to take advantage of outposts and machinery unique to each battlefield.

If a battle exceeds the time limit of the friendly command post is captured, it's a game over, but players can reverse that by using a Halloweed Corne Ash item.

Specific battles between units also proceed in real-time as units activate Active Skills (that can be set to be used in a certain order by assigning tactics) or passive skills, which trigger in response to conditions. A fight ends when both sides have exhausted their actions or one side is eliminated.

You can watch the video below.

Unicorn Overlord will release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on March 8, 2024. You're still in time to pre-order a physical copy on Amazon.
