Squadron 42 Sequels Planned by CIG

The long in-development title is apparently also going to receive sequels in the distant future.

Squadron 42

Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have had a long and tumultuous history since they were announced back in 2012. Many have given up hope that the games will ever release outside of early access. Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) on the other hand have grand plans for the future, although that future is farther off than what many may expect.

How do we know this? According to the January 2022 issue of MCV/Develop, players can expect a couple more years until Squadron 42 releases and five more years until Star Citizen is finally released:

"I think by that time we'll be operating a very large MMORPG," Carl Jones, COO of Cloud Imperium Games told MCV/Develop. "So there'll be a lot more publishing resources, a lot more game masters, more player support. That may require us to open facilities in other locations. At the moment we don't have any major Asia Pacific presence and that's probably something that will have to come in the long run, because if your game explodes over there, then you really need to start building up teams to service that."

"We'll still have huge development resources, because by that time we'll be developing the sequel and sequels for Squadron 42."

Timeline for Squadron 42 and Star Citizen

Both titles were announced on Kickstarter all the way back in 2012 when crowd funding video games was a new and shiny idea. Since then the games have raised over $400 million dollars and CIG reported a record income back in 2020. For the games themesleves Squadron 42 was delayed and "staggered" in 2019 while Star Citizen is in Early Access and releasing $40,000 packs for people to buy.

What does this mean for you? Nothing, really. You can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a game that isn't fully released yet in Star Citizen and pledge to play Squadron 42. CIG is looking to expand to a thousand employees so it isn't as if they don't have the money and manpower to see this through, so we'll have to see if either game can even come close to meeting the massive expectations that have been placed upon them.
