PlanetSide Arena will be playable on Steam Early Access starting next month on September 19. The developer, Daybreak Games announced the news for their PlanetSide battle royale via a developer blog update.
It will feature multiple modes having a larger than usual player size for the battle royale genre, reaching 300 players. The Squads mode puts up to 12 people together and the Teams mode will have up to 3 players per team. Alongside the battle royale focus, it will also have a Massive Clash mode supporting up to 1,000 players.
PlanetSide Arena Roadmap
PlanetSide Arena will have only three classes as of the Steam Early Access launch compared to the six in PlanetSide 2. The developer letter from Daybreak mentions the first three being the Assault, Engineer, and Medic. The roadmap above provided by Daybreak shows they plan to add new classes closer to launch in Q2 2020.
The last time we wrote about PlanetSide Arena, the PC version was delayed to Summer 2019, to release alongside the PlayStation 4. However, the roadmap shows plans for a full launch sometime in Q2 2020 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Delays aside, the content planned includes new modes, guns, mods, aircraft, and more. Despite the lack of aircraft on the Steam Early Access launch, there will still be vehicular warfare in the battle royale.
"We've always thought of PlanetSide as an evolving saga that will eventually escalate beyond Auraxis to interstellar war, and PlanetSide Arena is where it will start. Expanded factions, new weapons and vehicles, battles on distant alien planets (and the space in between) are all part of our vision," via the Daybreak developer letter.
