Obsidian Entertainment took viewers by surprise at today's Xbox Series X game showcase by announcing new content for their sci-fi action-RPG, The Outer Worlds. The DLC is titled The Perils of Gorgon and will continue the adventures of your space outlaw and crew of your ship The Unreliable.
The expansion will revolve around the mysterious Gorgon Asteroid, formerly the site of one of Halcyon’s most ambitious and disastrous scientific undertakings - now a lawless den of monsters and marauders. Your crew is roped into visiting this facility when you receive an urgent message, as well as a severed arm, desperately asking you to find out what happened to the director of a mysterious doomed project.
In short, Perils of Gorgon is more content for The Outer Worlds. You'll still be shooting robots and soldiers with laser guns, discovering the inhumane projects done in the name of dehumanizing late-stage corporate capitalism, and indulging in pulpy sci-fi antics in the vein of Flash Gordon. Also there appears to be more kitschy humor centered around a bartending robot.
Admittedly the trailer leans more on the sci-fi horror angle. The opening is shown in black and white with a vintage film grain. The titles are all done in a splashy matter unlike a sci-fi serial, and there's an escalating sense of intrigue as what exactly went down on the Gorgon Asteroid.
All told, it is fantastic that The Outer Worlds is getting more post-launch content. For all of the merits the core game had, many fans were mad that the main adventure was shorter compared to other open-world RPGs on the market, clocking it at maybe thirty hours tops. Perils of Gorgon is a small step towards fixing that issue.
The Outer Worlds: Perils of Gorgon will be available September 9th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and PC.
