Warner Bros and Netherrealm have released a new Mortal Kombat 1 trailer, and it's official: Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels himself, will appear in the game in the form of a Johnny Cage skin.

The original Mortal Kombat version of Johnny Cage was based on Van Damme, so it's appropriate that he finally gets to appear in the series.

As you'd expect, the trailer introducing Van Damme's appearance as Cage is pretty bombastic; it shows him going up against various other Mortal Kombat 1 fighters, including Cage himself.

In fact, it's Cage against whom we get to see Van Damme using his Fatality, and just like the rest of the cast's Fatalities, it's pretty brutal, with Cage being bisected by Van Damme's car door. This trailer is, as you'd expect, not for the faint of heart.

Van Damme himself is, of course, also providing the voice for the Cage skin, so you're getting the full authentic Bloodsport experience if you get the skin.

There's just one catch: the Jean-Claude Van Damme Johnny Cage skin is locked behind Mortal Kombat 1's Premium Edition. It doesn't look like you'll be able to buy it separately either, at least not at launch.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest in the long-running Mortal Kombat series of fighting games.

While it will feature many roster favorites, like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and, indeed, Johnny Cage, they will have "completely different roles" than you might be used to, according to series maestro Ed Boon.

Don't worry, though; while the narrative might be unfamiliar, Mortal Kombat 1 will boast the same kind of brutal over-the-top violence you're used to from the series.

Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to launch for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on September 14th if you're picking up the Premium or Kollector Editions. The standard edition will launch five days later on September 19th.
