Today Marvel Games and Netease Games announced an upcoming free-to-play 6 vs 6 hero third-person shooter, Marvel Rivals

If you look at the trailer and wonder if you're looking at some sort of Overwatch 2 mod, I won't blame you, as the gameplay and palette appear to be very similar. Yet, this is its own game, and pitches teams of 6 Marvel superheroes against each other.

A closed alpha test is coming in May on both Steam and Epic Games Store, with signups available now on the official site.

The trailer showcases plenty of well-known (and some a bit more obscure) superheroes including Iron Man, Peni Parker and her SP//dr, Spider-Man, Bruce Banner/the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Luna Snow, Magik, Namor, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Black Panther, Loki, Mantis, Storm, The Punisher, Magneto, Starlord, and Scarlet Witch.

There certainly appears to be a lot for the fans to enjoy, and it'll be interesting to see if Netease will manage to put enough of a spin to the hero shooter formula for the game to distinguish itself.

You can take a look at the trailer below, and it certainly appears to have some interesting mechanics, like destructible environments and Team-Up Skills.

Speaking of environment, the game promises maps inspired by iconic Marvel locations, like Asgard of 2099 Tokyo.

Of course, this is going to be a game-as-a-service, so we're not even in alpha and Marvel Games and Netease are already promising "Robust Post-Launch Updates" with seasons including new heroes and maps.

This is certainly a prolific time for Marvel Games, with a Wolverine game in development at Insomniac Games a Blade game in development at Arkane Lyon, and another game starring Captain America and Black Panther in World War II in development at Skydance New Media.

Recently, we also saw the release of the excellent Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Midnight Suns
