The news was revealed in a livestream which was ultimately captured by Redditor /u/GamingSince95 and submitted to the /r/Games subreddit. The short clip shows the Vice President & Executive Editor of Marvel's Digital Media Group Ryan Penagos stating, "[...] and there's even more on the horizon for 2017 like Spider-Man coming to PlayStation 4 [...]". However, a tweet by Insomniac Games (which was subsequently quote-retweeted by Mr. Penagos) may be reining in that statement made on the livestream:
Several users within the Reddit and Twitter discussions are skeptical of the "no release timeframe" statement by Insomniac, with one Twitter user in particular, pointing out that this isn't an outright denial on a technicality of semantics. One can't be sure whether the statement was inaccurate or if the release date had accidentally slipped out. We've reached out to Mr. Penagos and Insomniac Games for comment.
Although Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 6, 2017, this particular video game by Insomniac Games is not going to be based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, it will be focusing on an original story in a brand-new universe. Nonetheless, the latest game would likely enjoy a bump in popularity from the release of the film despite the differences between the two worlds.
The latest Spider-Man game was originally revealed by Sony at E3 2016. Further exploration of the announcement and associated media at the time revealed potential clues as to which characters will be featuring in the game including the possibility of the Chinese crime lord Mister Negative making an appearance.
