Tokyo RPG Factory, the latest of the new studios within the Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd, has announced their debut title. I am Setsuna, will be releasing digitally for the west during the summer for PlayStation 4 and on Steam. This game was originally released in Japan under the name Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna and announced at E3 last year as Project Setsuna.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4zdf_qONYg Being led by Director Atsushi Hashimoto, who most recently was also the Director of Final Fantasy Explorers, Tokyo RPG Factory aims for I am Setsuna to have a mix of narrative depth, a deep story, and rich characters. Taking inspiration from some of the classic JRPG's like Chrono Trigger, I am Setsuna returns with classic battle systems and authentic RPG gameplay.
In addition to the announcement for I am Setsuna a website was also launched. At this point in time the website only has the title and the following quote:
Everyone fell in love with the RPGs of yesteryear. Let's bring them back.
While the game has been announced in the west for PlayStation 4 and PC, in Japan Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna released last month in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and for PlayStation Vita in both physical and digital editions. There has been no word so far about whether I am Setsuna will also be coming to PlayStation Vita in the west.
Quick Take
It's great to see companies look back and try to recreate some of the greatest moments in gaming history. With recent examples from Kickstarter like Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee and Igarashi's Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night it seems that more gamers are getting on board with playing games with styles similar to those they used to play. Now all we need is a good new Spyro and Crash Bandicoot game.
