Marvelous and XSEED announced that Rune Factory 4 Special, the remaster headed to Switch later this year, is getting a special collector's edition. Titled the Archival Edition, the special edition will be available via "select retailers" and the XSEED Games Store. Rune Factory 4 Special Archival Edition comes with a physical copy of the game as well as:
- a 160-page art book featuring works from six different Rune Factory games
- a soundtrack CD with 36 songs, three of them new
- a "swimsuit day" DLC
- all packaged in a box with custom artwork
In the original Rune Factory 4, a hero falls from the heavens, only being saved by a dragon at the last second. Eventually rising to rule from a local castle, the hero finds himself adventuring in the local woods when he encounters a giant butterfly. Upon defeating it, the butterfly leaves behind a young girl. The hero now must balance life on the farm and in town with adventuring in the dungeons. Players can choose between a male or female hero, with marriage candidates to match.
Rune Factory 4 Special is not just a simple remaster of the 2012 original on 3DS to the Switch. It also comes with a new opening movie, a new "Hell" difficulty setting, and new content about living with your chosen marriage partner. Rune Factory, as an offshoot of Story of Seasons, blends the farming gameplay of the latter with extensive dungeon-crawling. Rune Factory 4 was the best-selling game in the entire series, moving over 150,000 copies during its original run. It would later go on to start development of Rune Factory 5, though development was in limbo for many years, before reappearing earlier this year. Depending on the success of Rune Factory 4 Special stateside, we might see more of Rune Factory 5 before long. You'll be able to snag Rune Factory 4 Special's Archival Edition when it launches sometime later this year.
