Circana, formerly known as the NPD Group, has released its sales analysis for June 2023.
As ever, a summary of the analysis was posted on Twitter by Circana's Mat Piscatella, and depending on your gaming habits, June's best-selling title might surprise you.
According to Piscatella and Circana, the best-selling premium game across all platforms in June was Diablo IV.
Given that the game enjoyed 10 million players in the month of June, that might not come as a surprise, but Diablo IV had some pretty stiff competition in the form of Final Fantasy XVI and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Those games are in second and fourth place on Circana's chart, respectively, with third place being occupied by Street Fighter 6, which also washed its face pretty well in sales terms.
On a year-to-date basis, the 2023 crown is still held by the phenomenally successful Hogwarts Legacy, with Tears of the Kingdom in second and Diablo IV bringing up third place.
It's worth noting, too, that these stats don't include add-on sales, so Diablo IV's microtransactions don't even count towards its dominance here.
In hardware terms, Sony will be pleased to know that the PS5 dominated in terms of both unit and dollar sales.
Again, this probably shouldn't come as a surprise given that Sony recently announced it's sold 40 million PS5 units to customers, but it will still be comforting for the gaming giant.
In fact, according to Piscatella and Circana, consumer spending on PlayStation hardware hit its highest June level since 2008 in dollar terms and since 2010 in unit terms.
It's worth checking out the rest of Piscatella and Circana's thread if you're a stats nerd and want to learn more about mobile game spending and other facets of the industry.
We'll bring you more on Circana's data for July and August as soon as we get it.
