Our guide on how to get a spear in Winter Survival will go over the main ways you'll access this useful weapon type, including the differences in acquiring them between each mode.

You'll need these to survive regardless of which mode you choose. However, outside of a couple pre-crafted spears, you'll need to stock up on resources to craft more.

How to Get a Spear

Getting a Spear in Winter Survival can be tough, depending on the mode you're playing in — both Story and Endless Mode have different requirements.

Story Mode

In story mode, you'll first need to reach the cabin in Act I by following the story missions (it's available early on). From there, open the wide drawer to find a Small Spearholder.

When equipped, the Small Spearholder takes up its own slot in your characters inventory. It lets you equip multiple spears at once, useful for when you want to throw them at prey.

As for getting spears, some can be found already crafted in the area. One, a Sharpened Softwood Stick, is inside the cave accessed after falling off the bridge (this is part of an early Act I quest to follow bear tracks).

To craft more Sharpened Softwood Stick, you'll need to reach day 3 and activate the bear event. This opens up the cabin basement, which features a Hunting Station that's used to craft more spears (and other hunting tools like traps)

Endless Mode

Winter Survival's Endless Mode instead locks spears behind Adaption Levels. The Sharpened Softwood Stick recipe is only unlocked once you reach Adaption Level 16, which is also how you unlock the Hunting Station.

Unlike Story Mode, a Spearholder is not required to actually use spears. However, you'll be completely defenseless against wolves until Level 16 is reached.

How to Kill Wolves

Wolves in Winter Survival are relentless, chasing you for long periods of time once spotted.

To kill them, you'll first need to equip a spear such as the Sharpened Softwood Stick. From there, hold down the left mouse button to charge your stab.

On Explorer difficulty, this is all you need to do. Once the wolf pounces, it'll automatically be stabbed. In Survivalist, you need to release the mouse button just before the wolf touches you.

The amount of damage you do will depend on the quality of the spear and how close to the maximum spear charge you were (you'll know you've reached the max on the circle in the center stops expanding).

You can also hold right mouse button to charge up a ranged throw. Note that the spear is affected (heavily) by gravity, though you can pick it back up if you miss.
