Peter Parker Spider-Man and Miles Morales Spider-Man swinging together text reads GOOD ENOUGH OR ALL TIME GREAT

Insomniac has carried most of the PlayStation 5 generation on their backs so far. From the launch of the console with Spider-Man Miles Morales, to the technical showpiece of the PS5's SSD with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and the impressive upgrade of Spider-Man Remastered, they may be the most consistent studio in the Sony stable.

That in mind, none of these games have managed to break through the average consensus of being good, but with Marvel's Spider-Man 2's tagline being "be greater, together" we have to wonder is this the game that will see insomniac ascend to serious Game of the Year conversations or is it just another win in their books, and for the PS5's image?

Marvel Games has taken the strategy of pairing the right team with the right character time and time again these last few years but this all started with the decision to allow insomniac to tackle arguably the most iconic superhero of our day, Spider-Man.

What a decision that was. Both Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales saw critical and commercial success, even on PC where Sony has struggled, once again aligning insomniac with a solid reputation of consistency with every release this generation.

When we look back to the sentiment around Marvel's Spider-Man, the weak point (aside from some of those side quests) is the predictability of the story. The game already plays great, and 2 seems to be refining that further as Miles Morales did, so all that remains to see the next Spidey game get a few extra points is the narrative.

Where the first games marketing and mystery box played a role in the underwhelming breadcrumb trail to the big villain reveal, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has been keeping their cards very close to the chest. But for comic fans familiar with the story, is there any way for a symbiote storyline to surprise us anymore? Let's find out.
