Action RPGs are a lovely genre where players beat up monsters by the thousands and chase fame, fortune, and — most importantly — loot.
Children of Morta

In Children of Morta, a dark force is spreading throughout the world. The Bergson family has been fighting the Corruption for generations and it's returned after a long period of peace.
The six battle-ready family members must venture out into the dark world and defeat the evil plaguing the land, all the while unfolding a beautiful narrative. This was one of my favorite games released this year — if you like action RPGs, this is a must-play game.
Diablo + Hellfire

Diablo is, without question, one of the games that made the ARPG genre explode in popularity. It was so good, in fact, that it catapulted a little-known studio called Blizzard Entertainment into the massive behemoth that we know and love (and sometimes hate) today.
One of the three Prime Evils (the titular Diablo, unsurprisingly) has arisen and corrupted a church in the town of Tristram. You must venture into the darkness to do away with this demon and save the land from the Lord of Terror! This also includes the third-party Hellfire expansion.
Moonlighter: Complete Edition

There is a subgenre of games where you can run an item shop. Some games focus on combat, others focus on the selling, and some land in the middle. Moonlighter is one of those games that strikes the perfect balance between the two.
In Moonlighter, you run a tiny little shop near some magical portals. People often venture into these portals for profit, and you're well-equipped to do the same. Unfortunately, all you have is a broom. Develop your skills, rebuild the town, equip your best gear, and uncover the mystery of what lies beneath your hometown!

Dead Space

If you want to terrify yourself, then it's hard to argue against picking up Dead Space. Your spaceship is missing more than a few crew members, and a bunch of very unpleasant enemies have moved in.
Unfortunately, you're not a soldier — you're an engineer.
A routine repair mission goes awry, so you're going to have to make do with what weapons you have and beat back this alien invasion. Just make sure that what you kill stays dead...

The best way to describe our next pick in the GOG Winter Sale 2019 is "Fallout, but made by Russians." Years after the world has ended, a few thousand people scratch out a living in the Moscow Metro.
You play as Artyom, a young man who ventures forth from his home station in the hopes of saving everyone from a dark force plaguing the area. Join up with the elite Rangers, fighting mutants, Nazis, and communists while conserving your extremely valuable resources.
Shadow Warrior 2 Deluxe

Shadow Warrior 2 is the complete opposite of the last two shooters. Sure, it's challenging, but it's silly. It's fun. It's irreverant.
Not too long ago, you met a mischievous spirit who taught you all sorts of magical powers. Use those powers, your sword, and a heck of a lot of guns to rip and tear into badass Yakuza and even badder demons alike!

Some games are made by 200 people in a massive office, others are made by a handful of people crafing an interersting experience.
Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami is a surreal throwback to the '80s with very unforgiving gameplay. Played from a top-down perspective, you have to work your way through levels, tearing up bad guys and not getting hit. One hit will mean the end of you, so make it through the levels quickly and carefully or you'll have a bad time.
Return of the Obra Dinn

In the early 1800s, a handful of sailors set out on the titular Obra Dinn with 200 tons of goods. Declared lost at sea, it makes a mysterious return into a port in London.
You take on the role of an insurance investigator for the East India Company's London office. Tasked with assessing the damage, you must board the ship and uncover the mystery. Oh, and you can also kind of travel through time.
This War of Mine: Complete Edition

There are plenty of games about war, and this is one such game. It does, however, have a notable twist: you don't play as the soldiers. Instead, you play as the civilians.
Trapped in the middle of a warzone, you and your fellows must do everything you can to stay alive and, hopefully, well-fed and comfortable. Acquire what you need (honestly or otherwise), fend off bandits, and avoid ruthless soldiers. The complete edition of this game contains a whole bunch of extra scenarios, and it's one of the best deals in the GOG Winter Sale 2019 at a little over ten bucks.

Metroidvanias are a special genre that blend platformers, adventure, and RPGs into something magical.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

If you've ever played and loved Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, you need to read no further. This was made by the same guy, and damn if it isn't just as good (if not better!).
If you haven't, well. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night tells the tale of an unfortunate girl who has been cursed by an alchemist. Fortunately, this curse also gives her magic powers that will help her defeat the many, many foes that she'll have to cut her way through to gain victory. Handcrafted by a genius of the genre, Bloodstaind: Ritual of the Night is a must buy for anyone who loves a fun and challenging game.
Gato Roboto

Part Metroidvania, part SHMUP, and all adventure, Gato Roboto is exactly what it says on the tin: you play as a cat in a massive armored mech suit.
A spaceship has crashed on an alien world and your captain is stranded. It's up to you to rescue him. Unfortunately, there's a pesky array of deadly traps and enemies standing in your way, so you'll have to use split-second timing to make it to the end of the game alive. Good luck!
Hollow Knight & Soundtracks

Underneath the town of Dirtmouth lies an ancient kingdom. You've decided to head down below in search of riches and adventure, but few who venture deep make it back alive.

You take on the role of one of these wardens as the time of yet another Blight approaches. Utilizing a party of various characters across all races, you must work your way through this epic RPG that's well and truly a masterpiece.

Set over a hundred years ago, the world has entered into a new ice age. It is only through massive furnaces and cutting-edge steampunk technology that everyone can stay warm and alive. Managing a city on the brink of death isn't easy, though — you'll have quite the challenge before you.
Into The Breach

Far into the future, giant monsters are plaguing humanity. Mankind has done the only sensible thing: built a force of deadly, powerful mechs to combat these creatures.
You command a square of three mechs who fight against these creatures on a grid-based map. You'll have an objective before you, and it's up to you to ensure that your mission is completed — no matter what it takes.
This game was made by the same folks who cooked up FTL: Faster Than Light, so you can be sure that it's a quality experience and that you'll want to tear your hair out after a challenging session.

You can beat some games in 30 hours, others in 300, and others still can eat up 3,000 hours of your life — and you'll love every minute of it.
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition

If you've ever wanted to make an entire day outright disappear, it's hard to think of a better way to spend it than with one of the Civilization games. While the newer, hex-based games are considered quite good on their own, there are still many who view Sid Meier's Civilization IV as the absolute pinnacle of the franchise.
Take on the role of one of several world leaders and spawn in on a randomized or pre-generated map. Capture territory, do trade deals, and send out your armies in a quest to conquer the world! Just don't forget to set an alarm, or you might keep playing until the sun comes up.
Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley falls into a specialist genre known as the "Farming RPG". The story of these games usually goes a little something like this: a relative has bequeathed you a farm. You have to turn it into a successful business, while also getting to know the people in town.
While Harvest Moon may have paved the way for this genre, the best games from that franchise have never really made their way to PC. Stardew Valley takes the best gameplay of the genre and mixes in new elements into something absolutely wonderful. Play it as much as little or you like — you'll have a grand time either way.
Terraria

In Terraria, you start with some copper tools and a guy hanging around you. Zombies come when the sun sets, so you probably should build a house. Then, after a few nights, a giant eyeball tries to kill you. Succeed, and you'll get some metal that you can use to make some more gear.
With the new equipment in hand, you venture underground to explore a little more, finding progressively more dangerous enemies — and greater rewards. Oh, and there are thousands of items you can craft, whether you want to gear up your characters or make your home especially beautiful.
Terraria takes all of the addictiveness of Metroidvanias and combines it with the addictiveness of building games like Minecraft to make something that is really, really hard to put down. It's practically a steal at $4.99, but ye be warned: the hours will fly by when you're playing Terraria.
