The official Overwatch Twitter account has tweeted out that Blizzard Entertainment's hero shooter has managed to be played by over 30 million players. It's a bafflingly high number and given that the game hasn't been out for all that long, it's all the more impressive that this milestone has been hit this early in the game's shelf life.

The Overwatch team led by Jeff Kaplan has already cemented itself as an eSports title worthy of taking notice of, drawing in thousands of viewers to streams on Twitch. Blizzard Entertainment is also hosting its own World Cup based on the game, which is now moving into stage 3 of 4.

Built from assets originally meant for the canceled Titan project, Overwatch has managed to carve out a niche that was previously occupied by Team Fortress 2, which is one of Overwatch's biggest influences.

Since the game's release last year, Blizzard have been steadily adding in new content to the game at no additional cost. Multiple new heroes have been added to the game thus far, with more heroes in development as we speak. Blizzard have also been hosting special holiday themed events that added in new modes and maps for the duration of the event. The most recent event, titled "Uprising," is the first event that expands on the Overwatch lore.

Overwatch will be celebrating its first year anniversary next month, underscoring even more just how popular the game has become in very little time.

Correction: We originally said Overwatch had sold 30m copies. Instead, Overwatch has been played by over 30m people, including players on free play weekends. We apologize for this error.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
