Psyonix, developer of the breakout indie hit Rocket League, is hovering its hand over a big red button. This button will allow Rocket League cross-play between Playstation 4 and Xbox One servers!

Vice president Jeremy Dunham says that it’s practically a matter of flipping a switch. Both platforms could play one another in Rocket League cross-play within hours. He then stated that the only roadblock at this point is Sony’s approval.

Rocket League cross-play

In an interview with IGN, Dunham mentioned that he’s sure Sony will agree to it. However, he doesn’t have any sort of timeframe in mind.

“It could be tomorrow, it could be longer than that. We just don’t know – we’re anxiously awaiting that, just like the rest of our fans.”

That being said, he’s certain that the holdup on Sony’s end isn’t indicative of their reluctance to approve. Instead, he understood that “”Sony’s such a big company that I’m sure it takes a while for them to figure out what it is that the roadblocks are, what sort of issues they might run into with other titles, any number of things that I can’t even begin to speculate on.”

Rocket League cross-play

Sony previously commented on this cross-network possibility back when Microsoft extended an invitation to all forms of cross-network play. Sony didn’t directly address Microsoft but stated, “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.”

Dunham believes that Rocket League cross-play is only the beginning and that more companies should step up. Not just companies, but fans as well: “I think that the more companies that show the world that they’re interested in that sort of thing, and the more communities that get behind it, the more likely it is that it’ll happen […] We think that the gaming community as a whole is the final voice in this – it’s what they want which will determine where we go eventually.”

Ever the optimist, Dunham added, “I do think it’s inevitable, I think the industry is going to get there, because I don’t see the downsides from it.”

Do you think Sony will approve the cross-platform play for Rocket League like this? What other games would benefit from it? Do you, like Dunham, think its the future? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

I’ve always thought of this issue that, strategically, Sony would decline.

Their lead means most current-gen player have PS4s, and the fact it’s the more powerful console means people who have both would probably favour their PS4. So at the moment your friends are more likely playing on PS4, meaning if you are usually an Xbox gamer you would be forced to buy a PS4 to be able to play with your friends. Allow cross-network play with Xbox and Sony could lose some potential customers that may have been forced to buy a PS4.

The only up side I can think of for Sony is that some PS4 players will have Xbox friends who play and so won’t play the game because they don’t want to switch to Xbox, having Sony miss out on their share of the game’s sale and maybe Playstation Plus subscription. Also, there could be backlash from gamers if they say no, so a big part of me thinks they will say yes because Microsoft have forced their hands.

I just really want cross-network play because I have a friend committed to the Playstation platform, but I prefer to play on Xbox. So I’m hoping Sony will agree and we can get over this silly platform-restricted multiplayer crap.
