Today a Reddit user, TowerNine, discovered a listing in the Xbox Store for special Halloween loot boxes for Overwatch. The listing was found, according to TowerNine, by looking at the recommended add-ons section on the Xbox Store on the console. These new loot boxes would be in the same vein as the Summer Games loot boxes that were available during the Olympics earlier this year. Whether or not Blizzard has changed how you can acquire these special event loot boxes and skins in the game, after some community unrest from the Summer Games boxes and skins, remains unclear. Blizzard has said they want to keep improving seasonal events like the Summer Games, “season after season”.
TowerNine also provided a video of them on the Xbox Store when questions about the authenticity of the existence of the Overwatch Halloween loot boxes came up. The video does seem to be legitimate, or just an incredibly well done fake, so as of now unless Blizzard makes a statement we have no way of knowing for sure if this is real or not. The time frame for the loot boxes shows them ending on November 1, at 4 p.m. If we assume the same length of time will be given for availability as the Summer Games boxes then the these Halloween boxes should be released sometime next week.
The description for the Halloween loot boxes reads:
Celebrate Halloween with some frightening treats for your heroes during a new event : Overwatch Halloween terror!
Trick out your collection by picking up halloween loot boxes, availables for a limited time. Every loot box contains up to four cosmetic items, including at least one halloween skin, highlight intro, emote, victory pose, player icon, voice line , or credits that you can use to unlock other items. more then 100 halloween items are waiting to be unwrapped!
if your halloween loot box contain an item that is already in your collection, you will instead receive coins
*Halloween loot boxes are available to purchase or earn in-game until 11/1/16 at 4pm pt.
We have reached out to Blizzard for comment and will update if we learn more.
With any luck Blizzard will have learned from the missteps of the previous Overwatch seasonal event in regards to the exclusive skins, emotes, and whatever else they add, but in the description it still seems that you have a chance of just getting coins from the special boxes. That might refer to getting special Halloween coins to buy the Halloween cosmetics, but that seems unlikely. Also of note is that in the trick-or-treat basket in the image is Sombra’s skull logo, could this mean that Sombra will be released alongside the Halloween Overwatch event? I, for one, hope so.
