Oculus Rift Held Black Background

Major VR company Oculus won't be making an appearance at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles later this year. This marks the very first time that Oculus has decided not to set up a booth since 2014. This means that Oculus is yet another name to scratch off the list of names coming to the major gaming trade show. It joins the likes of Electronic Arts who has opted for organizing something outside of the context of the E3.

While the company itself won't be making an appearance, you will most likely still see more than enough of the Rift on this year's show floor as other companies demonstrate VR titles on the show floor. This decision may have something to do with the controversy surrounding Oculus' founder Palmer Lucky, who left the company in 2017 after backlash over Lucky donating $10,000 to Nimble America, a non-profit organization that publicly backed the now President Donald Trump.

Their absence is likely also connected to Oculus currently not announcing new products. The company has nothing to campaign for while they're working on unrevealed products, so a booth at E3 is likely deemed not worth the money for them right now.

This year's E3 seems a direct response to some major players in the business opting to forego a booth at E3 in favor of their own events. E3 2017 will be the first edition of the tradeshow that consumers and industry outsiders can attend without having to go through the proverbial back door. Despite the list of attendees growing smaller, the tradeshow is still a major focus for a large part of games and hardware developers, as well as a convention that is followed by all kinds of gamers all around the world.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
