dawn of man 1-2 combat update

Dawn of Man 1.2 is here and it's bringing with it some serious improvements to one of the weaker areas of the game. The Dawn of Man Combat Update makes it easier than ever to defend your town from ferocious animals or deadly raiders — provided that you have the resources for all the new goodies they just introduced.

If you haven't had a chance to play this game just yet, Dawn of Man has you commanding a tribe of villagers in the days before recorded history. You'll start as a band of hunter-gatherers and eventually work your way up to a small town with crops and domesticated animals. Unfortunately, this kind of stability also attracts raiders and our review mentioned that this felt like one of the weaker parts of the game. Now, the combat portion is getting a serious boost.

Dawn of Man Combat Update

One of the neater additions in the Dawn of Man Combat Update is shields. Players can craft either Round Shields or Oval Shields and can equip their villages with these to use in conjunction with a one-handed weapon. Archers, obviously, wouldn't be able to use this, so you'll now have to play for a little more variety in how you equip your townsfolk.

This is supplemented with the addition of the Platform and Reinforced Platform. These new structures hug the inside of your walls and allow your people to get right up top and rain fire down on approaching enemies. You'll finally be able to do more than just simply put a mass of guard towers at every gate!

Another upside is that Watchtowers and Guard Towers have gotten a boost in durability, although they've also become more expensive. The downside is that all of these new fortifications make it easier to defend your town, so Madruga Works has upped the number of raiders from the Copper Age onwards to keep the challenge balanced.

Dawn of Man 1.2 - Other Changes

That's not all that's changed in Dawn of Man 1.2, mind. The Deep Iron Mine brings it more in line with other materials in the game and helps save players the trouble of going halfway across the map for a critical late-game resource.

A new convenient feature will let players easily locate all of their structures and megaliths. Once you start to play for a while, it's terribly easy to get a bit lost even in a town you're familiar with; this should help solve that problem neatly.

Several other changes have made their way into the game; you can read about them in the full patch notes on Steam. If you don't already own this game, you can get it on Steam, the Humble Store, or GOG for $24.99 or your regional equivalent.
