Data miners over at the /r/Overwatch subreddit have uncovered the existence of golden loot boxes for Overwatch in the game’s code according to a pair of threads (first thread, second thread).

Overwatch tends not to reveal too much about upcoming events, but data miners sometimes find out something in advance. In one case, the existence of the Anniversary Event and the Game of the Year edition was revealed after images were pulled from the Xbox Store through an API scraping website. Additionally, the previous event Uprising had its trailer leaked not too long before it was officially released.

However, some of the most interesting stuff has been uncovered by data mining the game’s code (either from the live or PTR version) such as “Event 6” which turned out to be Overwatch Anniversary. Typically, the code is encrypted, but either through leaks, good luck, or brute force data miners have been able to gather some tidbits of information every now and again.

Most recently, several new juicy tidbits of information were revealed through these data mining efforts. The first is a reference to “Event 7” which is a placeholder name typically associated with events in the game. Some keywords were also changed; for example, LOOTBOX_EXCLUSIVE_0 has been renamed to LOOTBOX_EXCLUSIVE_COMMON. Alongside these and other bits of information is a fully textured and modeled golden loot box. The confluence of these new pieces of information suggests that there may be an additional tier of loot box added at some point in the near future.

What golden loot boxes are and what mysteries they may hold are currently unknown, but I think it’s safe to say that there’s something in the works right now.

Quick Take

The OP of the earlier threads speculates that this may not be a standalone “event” but rather some sort of generic update to the game. As best as I can tell, the only “Event # > actual event” data point we firmly have is for the Anniversary event. While I think it’s a strong possibility that this could be hinting towards a traditional three-week event coming up at some point in the future, I also don’t think we have enough data to say that for certain.

What do you think the golden loot boxes in Overwatch are all about? What do you suppose will be inside of them? Do you think we’re seeing the addition of a new tier of loot box to the game or is this simply a different box design for an upcoming event? Let us know in the comments below!
