Fans of tabletop games and sci-fi have had plenty of projects to look forward to. These include official adaptations of the iconic and influential Blade Runner, a board game based on the Franco-Belgian fantasy comic series Thorgal, and even a tabletop adaptation of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Now, a Vikingverse TTRPG adaptation will be coming soon to the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.
What Is The Vikingverse TTRPG?
For those not aware, Vikingverse is a series of novels written by Ian Sharpe. They depict an alternate history, rewritten by one of the ancient Norse gods, to where the Icelandic regions never converted to Christianity, resulting in a future where vikings not just freely explore the seas but the very stars as well. This leads to a new generation of heroes fashioned after the epic poems of old as well as various classic stories reinterpreted through a sci-fi lens.
As for the Vikingverse TTRPG, it will be adapting the Norse end of the world, Ragnarök. The TTRPG, officially titled When The Wolf Comes, will emphasize heroism, storytelling, and an epic struggle that comes with the end of days. According to an official press release, the core rulebook will be 250 pages and contain everything both players and Game Masters need to tell their own sci-fi sagas of warbands and plunder. These will include monster statblocks, advice on how to run a campaign, as well as information on the Nine Realms of Norse mythology.
The Vikingverse TTRPG will be produced by Outland Entertainment and include Robert Schwalb as a designer. Schwalb has nearly 20 years of game design experience, his credits spanning Dungeons and Dragons, A Song of Ice and Fire RPG, the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay system, and the Star Wars Saga Edition RPG. In fact, the TTRPG will be using the Shadow of the Demon Lord system that Schwalb developed in 2015. Considering the system was designed for a horror-fantasy adventure about fighting on against a dying world, adapting it to this project isn't a stretch.
