Last September, acclaimed fantasy author Brandon Sanderson announced via livestream that a Stormlight Archives TTRPG was coming. Now, more than a year later, Sanderson and Brotherwise Games have released more info about this new project.

The Stormlight Archives TTRPG details

During this year's Dragonsteel Con at Salt Lake City, which was covered courtesy of Polygon, Sanderson and Brotherwise Games got into the weeds about the Stormlight Archives TTRPG.

Everyone listed here is a creative gem, I have no notes.

First and foremost, the creative team on this ambitious RPG is full of top talent.

The Lead Designer is Andrew Fischer (Mansions of Madness, Descent: Legends of the Dark). The writing team includes Lydia Suen (Legend of the Five Rings) as Lead alongside Sadie Lowry (Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep), Mario Ortegon (Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel), and others.

As for game mechanics, the Stormlight Archives TTRPG does have some ambitious ideas. The game will be a d20-system, but will distance itself from its fantasy TTRPG peers with some extra wrinkles. This includes the addition of a "plot die," which is only rolled during dramatic or risky scenarios.

In addition, the game will feature a skill-based magic system. So long spell-slots; hello "diverse range of Surgebinding skill tests." Finally, players will be able to join one of Cosmere's nine knightly factions, as well as the Artifabrians, Assassins, and Shardbearers.

Sanderson also briefly mentioned other tabletop projects based on his work. These included a new deck-building game based on the Mistborn novels, as well as a standalone card game called Shards of Creation. No release date was given for either game.

The Stormlight Archives TTRPG will be funded via a Kickstarter campaign scheduled to go live in 2024. A hardcover version of the RPG will come to retail stores in 2025. And given Brotherwise Games' track record with the Stormlight Premium Miniatures campaign, fantasy fans will be eating well.
