Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Mark Rosewater has put out a teaser for some upcoming Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty cards, giving out "tiny hints" of what we can expect for this upcoming return to Kamigawa.

Things have been up and down for Magic: The Gathering recently. While we got to check out cool new Dungeons & Dragons-themed cards last year, the Unfinity set ended up getting delayed due to global shipping issues. Now, the focus is shifting to the upcoming return to Kamigawa with Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, the next set that was first announced at Magic Showcase 2021 -- and Head Designer Mark Rosewater has some juicy teasers about what's to come.

The 'Tiny Hints' of Rosewater's Magic: The Gathering - Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Teaser

Magic: The Gathering - Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will have a lot of surprises in store -- including the return of some elements from Champions of Kamigawa. Head Designer Mark Rosewater gave out "tiny hints" about some of these upcoming cards in a blog post on his Tumblr page.

Let's start with a look to the past -- Champions of Kamigawa was the very first set in the Kamigawa block. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty will be paying tribute to its forebears with the return of "a popular legendary creature" from the block as well as two popular cycles, the latter of which will have a new twist.

The Brothers Yamazaki card will apparently get some company with a promise of "two new Yamazakis," although there are no specifics on what these might be. The planeswalker Tamiyo will get a nod, too -- one of her children will feature in this upcoming set as a Legendary Creature.

Paying tribute to the O.G. Kamigawa set is not all that surprising, but this is far from the most tantalizing stuff -- several of the hints dropped by Rosewater would definitely raise some eyebrows:

  • an unnamed mechanic that cares about you having two things that Magic has had since its beginning
  • finish of a five-card cycle many years in the making

[...]

  • a new creature token with an ability not seen before on a card

A couple of creature types were also announced that captured the eye. The first is that Kamigawa will feature a "Turtle Ninja", which is halfway to a hero on a half-shell, needing only some way to make it a mutant, and a teenager. Secondly, while it's unlikely to be Fox McCloud, the inclusion of a "Fox Pilot" was just too good to pass up.

You can read about all of the Magic: The Gathering - Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty teasers on Mark Rosewater's blog, but you'll have to wait a few days to actually see some new cards. You can check out new cards and mechanics debuting on Daily MTG from January 24-27, 2022, followed by the official debut of the set on the Magic: The Gathering YouTube and Twitch channels.
