Xbox has unveiled a brand new Fable trailer at today's Xbox Games Showcase. The trailer isn't what you might expect a Fable trailer to look like; it stars British comedy legend Richard Ayoade and shows off the rather unconventional action-adventure direction in which Playground has decided to go.

In the trailer, Ayoade's characteristically dry voiceover introduces a world in which the age of heroes is apparently over. As he talks, Ayoade is interrupted by what appears to be the main character of Fable, who is a tiny Borrowers-style figure clumsily jumping around his house. Ayoade quickly starts trying to grab at the player, who's leaping around and trying to escape him.

It's not quite what you might have been anticipating if you're a fan of the long-running action-RPG franchise, and we didn't get to see much in the way of gameplay; the footage looks to have been rendered in-engine, but it doesn't really show much in terms of what the game will actually look like. Still, this is our first glimpse of what Playground's vision for Fable will look like since the project was announced in 2020, which is fun.

According to Xbox, in the "fairytale land of Albion", you'll be able to decide for yourself what being a hero means to you. That's classic Fable stuff, but it's fair to say the new trailer has a more realistic and less cartoony style than Fable usually employs.

The use of Brit comedian Richard Ayoade is pretty on-brand for Fable, too; the franchise is well-known for featuring high-profile stars like Michael Fassbender, Simon Pegg, and John Cleese, so Ayoade's presence makes a lot of sense. Still, it's a departure from what we know Fable to be, so it'll be interesting to see what else Playground has up its giant sleeve.

We didn't get a release date or any more info about Fable during the show, so we're going to have to wait a little while to see what Playground has up its sleeve for this franchise. We do know the game will be playable on Xbox Game Pass on day one, at least. Stay tuned to TechRaptor for more Fable info as and when we get it. In the meantime, you can take a look at the rest of the Xbox Games Showcase reveals here.
