Indie developers n-Space and Digital Extremes announced the Dungeons & Dragons inspired Sword Coast Legends is going to have to wait a little long before it can be released. In a press release on Tuesday, the companies announced that, after a successful pre-access period, they decided that the game required a bit more polish before it would be ready for the official release. They indicated that over fifteen thousand players had signed up for the Head Start early access program, and the decision was based on the feedback from those players. As thanks and to make up for the delay, those who have pre-ordered Sword Coast Legends will also receive the "Rage of Demons" DLC for free upon release, even if they didn't participate in the pre-access event. The new release date for the RPG is October 20 on PC, Mac, and Linux. Sword Coast Legends will also be released on Xbox One and Playstation 4 sometime in early 2016.

Sword Coast Legends is inspired by the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms universe, and the developers have worked in conjunction with Wizards of the Coast in the creation of the game. Surprisingly, it is funded in house, with the developers speaking at one point about why they decided not to go the Kickstarter route. Sword Coast Legends is currently available for pre-order on Steam and the Playstation Store, as well as the Collector's Edition on their website which comes with physical collectibles.

Quick Take

It's nice to see a development company take their user base seriously, even without the added motivation of having to live up to Kickstarter backer demands. A lot of games delay release dates for any number of reasons, but it's always refreshing when it's based specifically on the feedback of players who got the chance to play the game ahead of time. And of course, seeing a lead developer happily answer questions about the games funding and history in a polite and professional manner. Kudos to n-Space and DE for how they've handled the release pushback.
