Happy new year and welcome to this week's State of the Game! We're still catching up to the end of last year and today we'll be taking a look at some stats for the Steam releases between the 11th and 17th of December last year.

If the last couple weeks have shown anything it's that no matter how you think a trend is going to go there are always exceptions to the rule. Typically this time of year is quite hard on new releases with many struggling to attract a large player base. Whilst we did have a couple of down weeks at the start of December the downward trend did not continue with many indie titles debuting to strong numbers with this week being no exception.

They Are Billions debuted into Early Access this week and took out the top spot by a wide margin. The game's popularity has grown significantly since its initial release, tripling in the few weeks since its release. The average hours spent by players in this game has also increased by 50% over the same period, showing that people are spending an increasing amount of time in it. They Are Billions is also on sale until the 5th of January so if you're thinking of picking it up now would be a good time if you want to grab it while in Early Access.

Okami HD, the PC port of the 2006 release, also released onto Steam in this week. This isn't the first time the game has been ported, having previously been re-released on the PlayStation 3 back in 2012. This was a cross-platform release that added in 4K resolution, widescreen aspect ratios and achievements to the now 11-year-old title. All things considered, it continues to perform well on Steam, still attracting some 800 or so concurrent users.

Hand Simulator, which made an appearance in State of the Game 2 weeks ago, shows up again this week. The increase in players is most likely due to the game's renewed popularity with streamers and big YouTube personalities as there haven't been any major updates to the core game around this time.
