If you've ever wondered why there's no Smash Ultimate rollback netcode, Masahiro Sakurai finally has an answer for you: it would introduce some pretty awful side effects into the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate creator Masahiro Sakurai recently had an interview with Famitsu, most of which was translated on Twitter by PushDustin and Robert Sephazon. According to Sephazon's translation, the lack of Smash Ultimate rollback netcode was just one of many technical issues that aren't quite easy to solve.

"A lot of attention was put into making the input delay when fighting 1v1 as very low." Robert Sephazon said in a tweet. "However, as a side-effect, when there is a delay in communication, the match may drop. Some small adjustments to matchmaking and other optimizations are still being tweaked."

"Regarding rollback netcode – he researched a similar feature during development and decided against it as side-effects were substantial," the Twitter thread continued.

Will Smash Ultimate Rollback Netcode Ever Arrive?

Sakurai apparently didn't address the specific problems, but one has to wonder if we'll ever get rollback netcode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Considering the difficulties they've been having with this feature, it doesn't seem likely — but that could change in the future.

"Although making adjustments and improvements to online play has its own risks, Internet speed has seen its own improvements over recent years, and Sakurai says he will review and adapt accordingly," stated another portion of the translation on Twitter.

While Internet connectivity issues have plagued some players, Sakurai has said that he will try his hardest to "make all possible improvements and adjustments to the game.: Good netcode is always one of the trickier parts of online games and this might be a problem that the Smash Ultimate developers can crack, but it probably won't be for a while — if the feature comes at all.

For now, you can read the translation of Masahiro Sakurai's interview with Famitsu starting with PushDustin's Twitter thread and subsequently moving on to Robert Sephazon's Twitter thread. If you haven't yet picked up this great fighting game, you can buy Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Amazon for just $49.94 or your regional equivalent.
