The Pokemon Company has announced a Pokemon Van Gogh Museum collaboration, and yes, you really did just read that.
In a new reveal trailer for the collaboration, Pikachu and Eevee run through a field of sunflowers, which, if you're an art aficionado, you'll know as the subject of a signature work of Van Gogh's.
As they come to a halt, they see the sky slowly take on the characteristics of Van Gogh's signature style, all post-Impressionist swirls and lively, vivacious colors.
Pikachu then looks overjoyed as a horde of Sunflora (what else?) close in on the pair, looking for all the world like they're about to initiate Pikachu and Eevee into some sort of cult.
The two Pokemon look at one another with glee, and the trailer cuts to a painting that resembles Van Gogh's Sunflowers series, only with a Sunflora instead of the titular flower.
It's not clear exactly what form the collaboration between Pokemon and the Van Gogh Museum will take, although we can perhaps expect various works of art that mash the two together.
Maybe we can look forward to Machokes taking the form of Van Gogh's famous peasant subjects, or perhaps we'll see Mew dancing between starry explosions in The Starry Night.
Of course, this isn't Pokemon's first collaborative rodeo.
The IP has also jumped into the real world with a series of Jet airliners, as well as skateboard decks, manhole covers, and plenty more.
Still, this might be one of the stranger crossovers Pokemon has engaged in. One has to wonder which one of the two participants reached out to the other to suggest the collab. Either way, it must have been an odd conversation.
The Pokemon Van Gogh Museum collaboration begins on September 28th. More information will be available "soon", according to The Pokemon Company, so watch this space.
