Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have stolen the coveted title of biggest UK launch of any Pokemon titles to date. According to Chart -Track, sales of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were up 17 percent on Pokemon X & Y. Although exact figures weren't released, it'll be interesting to see the actual figure, considering that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sold three million units in their first three days on sale.
According to this chart on the Chart-Track website, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire took 6th and 7th place overall in UK sales, being beaten out by the likes of GTA V, Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed: Unity, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and FIFa 15. The last Pokemon games to hold the record were Pokemon Black & White back in 2011, and Pokemon X and Y failed to beat Black & Whites sales in the UK.
The list shows some other surprising games that I didn't think would do so well. One of them is DriveClub right underneath Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire at number eight. I'd imagine this is partly due to the massive discounts on PS4 for DriveClub but I was very surprised to see it so high on the list. The crazy hyped Super Smash Bros. on the other hand, only entered at 13th, which is including sales of both the Wii U and 3DS versions. The Wii U version hasn't been out for long, and I'm sure it'll climb once it's released in Japan on December 6th, but I thought it would be higher considering the popularity of the series in the past. It further demonstrates the sheer selling power of Pokemon games, especially remakes of more nostalgic titles in the series.
So there you have it, Pokemon continues to be popular with a familiar formula, one of the few game series successful in sticking to the basics that everyone adores, who would have guessed? What do you think of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire? Let me know in the comments!
