The upcoming Soulslike game Lords of the Fallen 2 has had quite the troubled development, but it seems like it finally hit its stride: the developer has revealed the game's logo and some interesting changes coming to the franchise.
Lords of the Fallen 2 is a sequel to 2014's Lords of the Fallen, a fantasy action RPG that pits you against the demonic Rhogar Legion. You have the choice of playing as a Warrior, Cleric, or Rogue, each of which has their own skillsets to leverage against the demonic hordes.
The first game didn't do quite as well as its developers might have hoped. That's typically the death knell for a franchise, but the publisher of this upcoming sequel feels confident that the next game can help it grow into a full-fledged franchise.
How Lords of the Fallen 2 is Changing the Game
Originally, Defiant Studios was working on Lords of the Fallen 2. Unfortunately, the partnership between that studio and publisher CI Games ended in mid-2019; development officially changed hands to CI Games' new studio Hexworks in late 2020. Now, the publisher has revealed some more details about the sequel.
"The upcoming sequel moves the franchise to dark fantasy, and introduces a fully revised & more challenging combat system," read a tweet from CI Games.
Additionally, reporting from Game Informer notes that the publisher believes this upcoming sequel could help it expand into a franchise in the vein Sniper Ghost Warrior — another franchise from CI Games that has sold 11 million units to date. CI Games appears to be going all-in on this game — they also note that this is effectively their largest project to date.
Will it pay off? The popularity of Dark Souls and the recent Demon's Souls remaster shows that there's definitely a market for this style of game, but there are no guarantees until it's actually released to the world. We still don't have a Lords of the Fallen 2 release date just yet. For now, you can look forward to it coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in the future.
