Today Riot Games announced the official title of its upcoming League of Legends fighting game, previously codenamed "Project L." It's now titled "2XKO."

The exact meaning of the title has not been explained, but it's likely to be "Double KO" since the game focuses on 2 vs 2 matches, also supporting 2 vs 1.

The announcement was accompanied by a spiffy trailer showing new gameplay and the news that Riot is aiming for a release in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

For now, we see characters that were revealed before, including Ahri, Ekko, Yasuo, Darius, and Illaoi, but we take a new look at their spiffy moves.

You can watch them in action below.

A second video stars executive producer Tom Cannon as he explains the current state of development and the plans for the future.

The accompanying press release also mentions that Riot Games aims to provide a playable demo to players around the world by the end of 2024. The first destination of a tour of FGC events in which the game will be showcased is EVO Japan in April 2024.

Players can sign up for playtesting opportunities on the official website.

The developers mention that they aim to support and work on the game for a long time, working together with the fighting game community to make it the best experience it can be.

It was originally announced in 2021 and has been in development ever since. For now, we know that it'll be free-to-play matching Riot Games' main business model. Yet, the developers promised that it'll be “respectful of the players’ time and wallet in terms of monetization.”

If you'd like to see more and take a look at how much 2XKO has evolved, you can also enjoy an older gameplay trailer from August 2023. You can also enjoy new artwork of the announced characters below.

2XKO, alongside League of Legends and Valorant, survived a rather massive wave of layoffs at Riot Games that saw the departure of about 530 employees. Unfortunately, this also resulted in the elimination of the Riot Forge label, which has been working with external developers to expand the LoL lore and world.

The charming Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story is the last game for the brand as Riot refocuses its resources on its core games.
